Family of Paralyzed Girl Settle Car Accident Suit with State Police
The family of a Bakersfield, Calif., girl received a $4.5 million settlement for a spinal cord injury she suffered after an SUV slammed into her family's car while being chased by police.
KGET.com, an NBC affiliate, reported in "$4.5 million settlement for family of paralyzed girl" that the girl was caught by the neck and shoulder in her car seat and that the officer who rescued her didn't properly support her neck. This caused the spinal injury and paralysis, according to the court case.
The girl is now a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. Both the state and the driver of the SUV were ordered to contribute to the settlement.

In another police pursuit case, a robbery suspect slammed his truck into a passenger car while going the wrong way on an exit ramp. The Saturn driver was killed, and the robbery suspect ran away on foot. He was later apprehended, sentenced and imprisoned.
Jesse Bogan reported in "Settlement in St. Louis crash sheds light on police pursuit rules" that the city and police department agreed to a $700,000 settlement, the highest paid in 2010.
Texas Attorney, Wife Settle with Family of Teen Killed in Car Crash
An attorney and his wife reached a settlement for an undisclosed amount with the family of a teen, Audrey King, who was killed when she got into a car accident after leaving a party where the couple had served alcohol to her and other minors.
Brian Baxter reported in "Baker Botts Partner Reaches Settlement in Death of Texas Teen" that the suit alleged that the couple had encouraged teens to drink large quantities of alcohol at the party. When things got out of control, the couple forced attendees to leave, knowing they were intoxicated.
King was a passenger in a vehicle driven by one of her friends and was killed in a car crash that night. The couple was allegedly notorious in the neighborhood for serving alcohol at underage parties.
