Selecting a Lewisville Law Firm – What you should Know

Selecting a Lewisville family lawyer can be a very difficult task.  Making sure you have selected a firm that is well equipped to handle your case is not always easy.  Due to the sensitive nature of a family law matter selecting, a family law firm can be exceptionally challenging.

If you are considering divorce, legal separation or are in need of legal counsel, in regard to a family matter, it is important that you choose your law firm carefully.  Follow these easy steps to ensure you choose the family law firm that is right for your case.

Determine Your Legal Goals

Before you can effectively select the family law firm that is right for your case you will need to determine your legal goals.  Are you seeking a divorce?  A legal separation?  Perhaps you need to draft a pre-nuptial agreement or renegotiate a custody agreement.  While all family law firms are equipped to handle these cases, some will have reputations for dealing with specific matters.  If, for example, you are seeking a divorce and are in need of aggressive child support representation, you will want to find a firm that has a proven track record in child support cases.

If you are simply exploring the possibility of divorce it is still wise to speak to a divorce attorney but make sure he or she understands that you have not made a final decision.  Most lawyers will be happy to review your case, free of charge.  Do not select an attorney until you have decided your goals definitively.

Research Family Law Firms

Once you have determined your goals, for the outcome of your case, it is time to start researching family law firms.  Ask friends and family if they can recommend any legal professionals.  Even if they refer you to a lawyer that does not practice family law, perhaps that attorney can recommend a colleague.  Use the internet to learn about family law firms in your area.  Gather a list of prospective family attorneys and set up meetings with each before deciding which to hire.  This will enable you to get a feel for the firm and how they will handle your case.  Do they make you feel comfortable?  Do they seem to take a genuine interested in your case?

Ask for References

Ask each potential law firm for a few references.  Speaking to past clients is one of the most effective ways to learn about a firm.  The references should be able to tell you how the law firm handled their case as well as specifics about what kind of support you can expect from the firm’s staff.

Once you have completed this process you should be able to make a confident decision about which family law firm you would like to hire.
