Finding the Right Attorney
Finding the right attorney should be about more than finding a lawyer with an excellent record. Of course, it is critical that you pay close attention to the success rates of different law firms there is, after all, no other way to judge one firm against another without talking to their attorneys. However, success rates are not everything. It is equally important that you work with an attorney with whom you feel comfortable, and who understands your needs.
There are several aspects of an attorney-client relationship that require consideration. The first is financial.
Some lawyers charge more than others, and some charge for services that you do not really need. Be aware of your own financial limitations, and stick to them. Many law firms offer free consultations, and many also operate on a contingent fee basis. This means that the lawyer will only receive a percentage of the amount you are compensated if your case is successful. If it is not successful, the only payment you may have to make is for the office fees such as filing and the writing of reports. It is always advisable to get the fee agreement in writing.
The second consideration is your personal relationship with your attorney. Even if an attorney has a wonderful success rate, if you do not feel able to talk about your case openly and freely, your case will suffer.
An attorney should be attuned to your concerns and should be able to address them coherently and with respect. Any attorney who comes to your case with his mind already made up will be less effective than one who works with you to craft your case.
