Dealing with Workers’ Compensation Insurance

Whether you participate in the company medical or dental insurance plan or not, there is one type of insurance coverage you have that you may not have known about. This type of insurance coverage, that your employer is required to provide for you, is called workers’ compensation, which is regulated by state laws. Like everything else, there are exceptions to workers compensation coverage and they are:

  • Businesses with less than four employees may not be required to provide workers’ compensation insurance
  • Very large companies who have a high level of liquidity may serve as their own insurance carrier

If you have been injured in a workplace accident, or have contracted an illness because of the conditions in your workplace, you must notify your employer immediately. In order for workers compensation insurance to provide benefits to cover the financial cost of your injury or illness, you must accurately and completely fill out the claim forms your employee should have available. If you don’t fill them out properly, the insurance company may then have to make information requests which could delay your benefit payments. In addition to the claim forms, the insurance carrier will need medical documentation of your injury or accident so you need to seek medical attention right away and provide your employer with the medical information you receive. Once the insurance company has confirmed the validity of your claim you will then start to receive weekly benefit checks.

Although workers compensation laws were written to protect the injured employee, there are exceptions and rules that must be adhered to. Contacting a competent Cincinnati workers compensation attorney will help you to understand the requirements the insurance companies have in order to approve your claim and begin making payments. Your attorney will also stay on top of your claim and if there are any legal roadblocks he will handle them with your best interests in mind.
