What to Do Following a Sudden Acceleration
Unless you are a stunt driver in an action movie, you want to avoid sudden acceleration at all costs. While these deadly incidents are unpredictable, you can avoid problems by following dealer instructions regarding recalls and maintenance.
For example, Toyota recommends you remove the driver-side floor mat and stow it in your trunk, in order to avoid the possibility of it interfering with normal acceleration.
What to do when your car is a runaway
If you are driving a Toyota and find the vehicle is accelerating out of control, try taking the following actions to slow it down or stop it:
- Pull the floor mat back and dislodge it from the gas pedal
- If the floor mat cannot be dislodged, firmly and steadily step on the brake with both feet but do not pump it repeatedly as this will worsen the situation
- Shift the transmission gear selector to the neutral (N) position and use the brake pedal and emergency brake to make a controlled stop, then turn the engine off
- If you cannot put the vehicle in neutral, turn the engine off or to ACC. You will not lose steering or braking, only the power assist to these systems
- If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly push the button for at least three seconds to turn the engine off
- If the vehicle has a conventional key ignition, turn the key to the ACC position to turn the engine off. Do not remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel

Criminal Defense in Queens
Charges, or even just suspicion of criminal activity could result in very serious consequences. An actual criminal conviction would be much worse.
Both federal and state statutes dictate criminal law, though most cases are dealt with under state laws, unless the crime was clearly against national property and resources. In Queens, New York state laws will most likely affect your case.
It is important to act fast and use your right to an attorney when facing a criminal offense in Queens. Reach out to an experienced Queens criminal defense attorney who is a veteran in New York criminal law.
Crime is divided into two categories under New York State criminal laws — felonies or misdemeanors. Felonies are very serious crimes with sentences of long periods in prison and heavy fines. Misdemeanors rate lower than felony crimes, with sentences of typically less than one year with lower fines. Either misdemeanor or felony criminal convictions can have a serious impact on your social image and ability to earn a living.
White-collar crimes

$80M Settlement Awarded for Chinese Drywall Cases
A major class-action suit against Interior/Exterior Building Supply Ltd. of Louisiana (InEx) was announced, in which $80 million will be made available to compensate claims of defective Chinese drywall that damaged thousands of homes in Louisiana and nationwide.
The company will pay $8 million, while assigning its insurance rights to $72 million. The case had been consolidated into multi-district litigation, or MDL, in federal court in New Orleans before Judge Eldon Fallon who will have to approve the settlement.
Information in this post gathered in association with a Los Angeles workers compensation attorney
The settlement was reported in Bloomberg by Laurel Brubaker Calkins and Allen Johnson, Jr. in Chinese Drywall Lawsuits Are Partially Settled by Louisiana Supplier InEx. The company’s main insurers each will pay out $4 million. InEx’s excess coverage in the amount of $72 million comes from North River Insurance Company.
The settlement divides claimants into two categories: those covering Louisiana property owners and those including all other U.S. homeowners. The excess insurance will be used for the non-Louisiana claims.
InEx had purchased over 500,000 pieces of drywall from the Knauf Group and other Chinese manufacturers in 2005 and 2006. Over 1.1 million sheets of the drywall were used to rebuild homes in Louisiana following hurricanes Rita and Katrina. In all, about 14,000 claims have been filed nationwide.
The drywall was found to exude foul-smelling odors and gases that corroded wiring and appliances. Homeowners were forced to replace the drywall at considerable expense.
The $80 million settlement is considered an initial step in a final settlement of Chinese drywall cases worth an estimated $500 million.
