Local and National Accident Statistics

It's easy to forget how much danger we're in each time we venture out on the road. Not so, however, for those who routinely work with traffic accidents and their victims. Those law enforcement offices, medical personnel, and accident attorneys are keenly aware of vehicle and driver hazards. These statistics will help you think about what they represent the next time you get behind the wheel.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which reports on bus and truck accidents in Atlanta and the state of Georgia’s record in 2008 looks like this:

  • More than 3,900 large trucks and 100 buses were involved in non-fatal crashes.
  • Nearly 2,100 large trucks and 58 buses were involved in injury accidents.
  • More than 3,200 people were injured in crashes involving large trucks while 123 were hurt in bus accidents.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, part of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, keeps track of fatal accidents by state and for the country as a whole. FARS reports that Georgia fatalities actually decreased by three percent from 2006 to 2007 (1,693 to 1,641, respectively).

Nationally, the 2007 breakdown looks like this:

  • There were 37,248 fatal crashes, in which 21,647 drivers and 8,657 passengers were killed. (The locations of nearly 100 victims could not be established.)
  • More than 5,100 motorcyclists met their death on the road, as did 4,654 pedestrians, and nearly 700 pedal cyclists.

FARS also reports the following 2007 figures by population, license, and registration. There were:

  • 13.61 fatalities per 100,000 population.
  • 16.05 fatalities per 100,000 registered vehicles.
  • 19.96 fatalities per 100,000 licensed drivers.
